Pipe bursting in Bell: the checklist before a new sewer line is pulled

Pipe bursting replaces a sewer line by splitting the old pipe and drawing a new one behind the head, and the result is only as good as the planning that happens before the winch is set. This page covers the checks a crew runs on a lot in Bell before the pull, so the owner knows what each one is for.

When bursting is the answer

A liner needs a host pipe that is still a pipe. When the camera shows a section that has collapsed, a joint offset by more than the liner can bridge, a line that has sagged into a belly that holds water, or a lateral too small for the fixtures now draining into it, the old pipe cannot be repaired from inside and has to be replaced. Bursting does that replacement along the existing path, which in Bell usually means under the lawn, the driveway and the sidewalk without touching any of them. The TSR Trenchless, Inc. page for Bell at the TSR Trenchless, Inc. pipe bursting page for Bell shows recent examples.

Check one: the camera and the locator

Before anything else the line is recorded end to end and a locator traces it on the surface, marking its depth every few feet. That map decides where the pits go and tells the crew about every bend, because a bursting head follows gentle curves but not a sharp elbow. It also measures the length of pipe to order and shows whether the connection at the main is a simple tap or a saddle that needs rebuilding.

Check two: everything else in the ground

The expanding head displaces soil outward as it travels, and anything within about a pipe diameter of the sewer feels that push. Gas and water services, electrical conduit, irrigation lines, a neighbor's lateral and the city main itself are located by DigAlert markings and by potholing where a crossing is close. If a utility is too near, that stretch is excavated by hand or the plan shifts to lining. This is the step that cannot be skipped, and an owner should expect to see the paint marks on the surface before the pits are dug.

Check three: the pits and the surface above them

Pits are placed where the restoration is easiest: in a planter rather than a driveway, at the curb rather than mid-sidewalk. The crew photographs the surface before cutting and the proposal says who restores what. In Bell the pit at the street end often sits in the public way, which brings the encroachment permit and sometimes a traffic plan. Pits inside the property line can usually be opened on a plumbing permit alone.

Check four: the pipe going in

The replacement is high-density polyethylene, fused into one continuous length with no joints for roots to find, and sized to the fixtures the property has now, not the ones it had in 1950. Upsizing is decided here. The fused string is laid out on the surface along the run the day of the pull, which is why the crew needs the yard or the driveway clear.

Check five: the connection at the main

The street end of the pull is where bursting jobs in Bell most often meet a surprise. The old lateral may enter the main through a factory wye, a saddle fitting or a hole chipped in the main decades ago and mortared around. The receiving pit exposes that joint, and the new pipe is connected with a fitting the city approves, inspected before the pit closes. Where the main is deep under the street, the pit is in the public way and the permit, shoring and traffic control follow. The proposal should say whether the connection is included; it is the item most often left out of a low bid and added on the day.

The pull and after

The winch cable is fed through the old pipe, the head is attached to the new pipe at the entry pit and drawn through, splitting the old line as it goes. Connections are made at both pits, the camera runs the new line, and the pits are backfilled and compacted the same day. Hardscape is reset or patched as the proposal states. The county-wide coverage for this work is on the Los Angeles County coverage hub, and the methods are explained in plain terms at the cured-in-place pipe reference site.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting

How much digging does bursting involve?+

Two pits: one where the pull begins, usually near the house or at the property line, and one where the new pipe is received, often at the curb or at the connection to the main. Each is a few feet across and backfilled the same day. The run between them, which is most of the pipe, is never opened.

Why would a contractor refuse to burst a line?+

Because something is in the way. A gas or water service crossing within a foot or so of the sewer, a concrete encasement, a repair clamp or a section of pipe lying in a void can all stop the head or send the force where it should not go. The locating and the camera find these, and the method changes to lining or a short excavation at that spot.

Can the new pipe be bigger than the old one?+

Yes, usually one size, from four to six inches, and the expanding head makes room for it. Upsizing suits a house in Bell that has added a unit or a bathroom and now outgrows a four-inch lateral. Going two sizes up is possible in soft ground but is checked case by case.

Who marks the other utilities?+

The contractor calls DigAlert, the Southern California one-call service, before any pit is opened, and the utilities mark gas, water, power and communication lines on the surface for free. Private lines such as irrigation, landscape lighting and a pool run are located separately by the crew.

How do I get a quote for bursting?+
